Matchday 1 is over, giving us all a chance to breath and recover. Many of the results were as expected, however, there were some surprises and one huge upset seeing the giant Italian club AS Roma fall at home to newcomers CFR Cluj a Romanian side making the Champions League for the first time ever.
Most of the matches lived up to the excitement that has become synonymous with the Champions League. Only three of the big four claimed 3 points each as expected while Manchester United could only muster one point at home against the Spanish club Villareal. Chelsea scored 4 goals against French Side Bordeaux; Italian league champions Inter Milan won 2-0 vs Panathinaikos and Barcelona beat Sporting 3-1 to claim 3 points.
With 5 more games each during the group stage every team will be aiming for a top two finish to advance into the quarterfinals, so we can expect every match to be as competitive and exciting as these on matchday 1.
